One of my most popular blog posts is Rimmel Match Perfection Old vs. New. When Rimmel changed the formula and packaging of their Match Perfection foundation I did a comparison post comparing both products. When I first purchased the new formula I noticed a few differences. I have had plenty of opportunities to wear this foundation since that post and I wanted to compare my thoughts from two years ago to how I feel about the foundation now.
I am currently on my third bottle of Match Perfection. I have used up one bottle of the old formula and one bottle of the new formula. I purchased my second bottle of the new formula in April 2017.
coverage and consistency
Out of the three bottles I’ve tried the consistency has been different in all of them. The old formula was the thinnest and the easiest to blend. My first bottle of the new formula was still easy to blend but slightly thicker. My current bottle has a really thick formula and it doesn’t pump evenly or blend as nicely as the previous two. I’m not sure whether the formula has changed again or if I just got a bad bottle.
Despite the thick formula this is still a good light-medium coverage everyday foundation and I will use up this bottle. I have discovered one layer is better to work with than two. This isn’t layering as well as previous bottles so I simply apply a little more concealer to hide any redness the foundation doesn’t cover.

shade
When Rimmel changed the formula they also discontinued my shade. I previously used 081 Fair Ivory and following the re-formulation had to buy the lightest shade, 010 Light Porcelain. I feel Fair Ivory was a better match for me than Light Porcelain. (Maybe I should have gone one shade darker than Fair Ivory and tried that instead – it just would have meant applying less product to avoid looking orange). Light Porcelain has more of a pink undertone compared to Fair Ivory. I have both cool and warm undertones and have come to realise neutral undertones suit me best.

Dewiness
In the post from two years ago I said the old formula could sometimes look too dewy but at that stage I didn’t have a setting powder. In hindsight, some of that dewiness is missing from the new formula. The old foundation gave natural, healthy looking skin without having to apply highlighter.
Despite this foundation no longer being my favourite it still has things going for it. The packaging is sturdy and the glass bottle allows you to see how much product is left. There is minimal wastage as the pump reaches all the way to the bottom of the bottle. This foundation contains SPF 20 so it helps protect from the sun. The shades cater to those with pale skin and those with deeper skin tones, there’s at least 12 different shades.
I’m not sure whether I will repurchase this foundation when I finish my current bottle. I may come back to it in future but for now I’ve got other bases that perform better.

I haven’t tried that foundation before but I do like most of Rimmel’s products! Since switching mineral foundation though, i dont plan to go back to liquid foundation at the moment 🤗

Rimmel in general is one of my favourite brands! Mineral foundation is meant to be really good for the skin, right?

I find it insane that a brand would change the formulation of a product so drastically and give it the same name. In my eyes it would chase away loyal users who are looking for the old formulation. Foundation can be so tricky as well in terms of finding the perfect product.
There’s this Clarins foundation I used to love… I can’t remember the name but it was a light reflecting one. I was absolutely obsessed with it until I moved over to Lancôme and Chanel foundations. As you can tell, it is so forgotten that I can’t remember the name. 😂 Lancôme Teint Miracle is my favourite foundation ever though. I will find a way to repurchase it every time even with its hefty price tag. At least not quite as bad as the price of Chanel foundations though. 🙈 I so badly want to repurchase Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet, I think you will like it too because it has a very natural finish and it’s incredibly light on the skin, but I am just struggling to justify spending that kind of money on it. It’s a wonderful spoil though and the foundation lasts forever! I think I had my bottle for nearly three years. 😊

Sometimes products change for the better but quite often you hear of people disgruntled about the changes. I have never tried a high end foundation before because like you say the price point can be off putting but if a little goes a long way and the product is better for my skin type and lasts a decent amount of time maybe I should. I’ve got two Max Factor foundations that I really like, they feel more lightweight and have good coverage. Maybe I’ll look into something different when I’ve used up what I have 🙂 x

Weird that each bottle has different consistencies even between the new bottles. I wonder if they are still perfecting the formula.
There are many other foundations out there to try if don’t like this one. Have you tried any from L’Oreal or Maybelline?

That’s a good point, though the old formula was better in my opinion 😛
I was thinking about trying L’Oreal’s True Match because the shade range is supposed to be good and I know a lot of people seem to like it.

I guess it’s tough to enjoy a new formula when the old formula is the reason you liked the product in the first place.
My favourite foundation right now is Tarte’s Water Foundation but if we’re talking drugstore, I really like Maybelline’s Fit Me foundation. I’ve heard Trus Match is good too, I look forward to a review if you should try it out 🙂

Is it normal for products to be so different between bottles? I had no idea you could get a bad bottle. It’s so hard to find a foundation, especially if you have light skin which is prone to redness. I have rosacea and I’ve been looking for something that would cover it well enough and not be too heavy. I was only able to find it when my dermatologist prescribed it. It’s this B.B. cream by Noreva which I can only get at a pharmacy. A small amount is thick enough to provide good coverage, I was definitely surprised. I apply this green primer concealer by Essence on my cheeks and chin and it helps a lot 😊

Maybe the bottle had been sitting in the shop for a long time and was old stock? The formula of this feels quite thick and heavy on the skin and sometimes feels like it’s dragging when I try and buff it in. I get a little bit of redness around my nose but that skin also gets dry. I have other foundations that don’t accentuate that dryness or redness 🙂

I’ve not tried this foundation – only the corresponding concealer which I really liked. So odd that the consistency changed bottle to bottle though. And too bad about the change in colour range – it’s a constant struggle for me to get a good match as I’m not obviously warm or cool. I used to like the Revlon ColorStay Whipped Crème Foundation but the jar format turned me off over time. A pump on the bottle is a must now for me! I also don’t mind squeeze tubes. 🙂

To be honest, my advice is don’t try it! 😛 I wonder if Rimmel changed the concealer too?
I wasn’t the lightest shade in the range and with the new formula I am. I always wear bronzer with this foundation to add a bit more colour otherwise I look too pale.
Pumps and squeeze tubes are the best for me too!

I’ve got a very pale bottle of this which I use for mixing, but I used to like the old version of this and was left really disappointed when I’d rebought it and realised it wasn’t the same!

Glad someone else feels my pain! Although I did wear this foundation today with my Collection concealer instead of my MAC and it faired better. From now on when I use this foundation I’ll use my Collection concealer 🙂

I hate it when brands discontinue certain shades!
I fell out of love with a foundation once (but it’s no one’s fault). I used to love Maybelline’s Mousse foundation, but a few years ago my skin changed dramatically from oily to very dry. And Maybelline’s Mousse foundation just flakes off of dry skin, so I had to find a different foundation. I tried lots of foundation – and then I found my holy grail = Max Factor’s Pan Stik!

Is that the Mousse liquid foundation or the Mousse in a little glass pot? Max Factor do decent foundations, I’ve got Lasting Performance (in two shades) and one of their CC creams 🙂 x

I loved the original Match Perfection too as it definitely seemed a little more orange on me when it changed, I still love it and will have it in my collection but I’m definitely reaching for my L’oreal Infallible Foundation a lot more these days!

Aaah that’s it’s so disappointing when formulas and shades change. Finding a perfect foundation is tricky enough. However your skin always looks lovely in photos so I think it must work well for you😊 x
