Redhead Rambles #18

Hello everyone and welcome to ‘Redhead Rambles’. The series does what it says on the tin, it is a redhead (me) rambling about her week. I share what I’ve been up to each week, how I’ve been feeling and what I’ve been listening to or watching. Occasionally I will my share favourite blog posts and links I’ve found useful or interesting.

  • Before I get into how my current week has been I wanted to let you know I am no longer in a relationship. If you don’t follow me on Instagram you wouldn’t have seen my story announcing it. It was my first relationship and I was in it for almost two years. When another person takes up such a big part of your day and knowing they’re there makes you happy it’s hard to go from that to nothing. I feel like that’s the reason it hurts so much. I know I am a strong person and I will get through, it’ll just take some time.
  • Last Friday I tried to go and see Avengers: Infinity War at the cinema but all the evening sessions were sold out.
  • Saturday was a very emotional day, I cried a lot and cried hard. I spent the day in my pyjamas, read and watched a couple of episodes of Poirot.
  • Sunday was my first day in my current job as a single lady and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I told my team leader and another staff member what happened and they were supportive.
  • Sunday was also the first day I didn’t cry and I’ve managed to not cry for five days straight.
  • I really want to try the sock bun mentioned in THIS VIDEO from But First, Coffee but it seems complicated…
  • I had a one on one meeting at work with my team leader which was very positive and complimentary.
  • The online makeup order I placed a few weeks ago arrived. A post sharing what I got will be up on Monday.
  • Monday’s post will be the last one for a while. I plan on having a blogging break for the next month or so, so my posts will be sporadic. I won’t not be posting but it won’t be three times a week. I will still be on Twitter and Instagram and reading/commenting on blogs.

What I’ve been listening to:

Shane Filan – You and Me – This album is so special to me and is one of my top five favourites of all time! I love every song and what makes an album a standout and worthy of top five status is not only listening to it a lot and knowing all the words but knowing all the instrumentation and all the little vocal changes. I still remember the hype when this came out and how excited I was.

Ariana Grande – No Tears Left To Cry – I have always had an appreciation for Ariana’s voice. Her new track is catchy and I’m excited for what’s to come.

How was your week?

September Favourites 2017

September is the first month into my library job and work wise I’ve been less stressed and happier. Health wise I have been sick all month. I have always had trouble with my nose and my sinuses have been giving me grief. I got antibiotics but after I finished them the problem came back so I tried a sinus rinse which has been helping a lot. As a result of being sick I have felt lethargic and haven’t felt like doing much. Fingers crossed I’m better soon!

Onto this month’s favourites:

1. Shane Filan – Love Always – I have mentioned Shane Filan a number of times on the blog. He has one of the best voices and is one of my favourites to listen to. He released his third studio album, Love Always, in August and I have had it on repeat the past couple of weeks. My signed copy arrived a fortnight ago and the album is better than I thought it would be. The majority of songs are covers of famous love songs and I was in two minds about buying the album originally as I’m not the biggest fan of cover albums but Shane puts his own spin on each track and the album is cohesive. Standout Tracks: Don’t Dream It’s Over, Beautiful In White, Completely, Unbreakable and I Can’t Make You Love Me.

2. Vaseline Cocoa Butter Lip Butter – Being sick my lips have been cracked and dry and this has been my saviour! I bought this lip butter last year and it is perfect when my lips need extra care. It smells like chocolate and smells very similar to my Cocoa Butter body butter from The Body Shop. The little pot is the cutest!

3. Navy Blue Fluffy Jumper – This is my favourite cosy jumper and I seem to have worn it a lot this month. The jumper is very warm and I love the colour, it goes so well with my hair. I wear this jumper casually and to work and it always gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling when I do.

4. Revlon – Beginner’s Luck – I had a makeup declutter and almost gave this nail polish away. I had a pile of shades I wasn’t sure about and swatched them on paper. I wasn’t convinced enough to give this shade away and couldn’t wait to try it on again. I am glad I kept it. It is a subtle, shimmery shade that is great for everyday and the formula is dreamy.

5. Reading – At the start of the month I mentioned I would be starting a new blogging series: What I’ve Been Reading. Working at the library it only seems appropriate I make an active effort to read more and I’m slowly working through a small pile of books. I have been pretty busy this month and haven’t had much time to read but I have been enjoying the moments I have been able to. I love getting lost in a good story. Sadly, I haven’t been hitting my one book a week quota so far.

Life Lately #2

Hi everybody! Hope you’re well! In April I wrote a post called Life Lately #1 rounding up what’s been happening and what’s going on. There have been some changes recently and I wanted to keep you all in the loop.

Blogging

Since I started my two posts a week routine on Tuesdays and Thursdays I have been sticking with it and manage to get two posts up nearly every week. I purchased a Canon 700D DSLR in July and purchasing that was an investment that got me excited to blog again. I have been experimenting with the camera and taking photos which have featured in posts on the blog.

Here are a couple I’m particularly proud of:

Work

In July I applied for a job at the city library. I was selected for an interview and offered a position a few weeks later. Things had been building up at my current job for a while and I felt some personal issues were getting in the way of my work. I was doing long hours (two 10 hour days) plus both weekend days and honestly I felt stuck in a rut. The library job was an easy decision for me, I’ve always loved books and reading and I even read at work. My last day of work was August 20 and I started at the library a couple of days later on August 23 – the day this post goes up! It was sad to say goodbye to the friends I made but I will go back to say hello and don’t want to forget them. I am excited for my new job and I hope it brings relief and less pressure/stress.

Personal

My boyfriend and I are still going strong and in September we celebrate our one year anniversary! I can’t believe how quickly that time has gone but I feel so lucky to have met him and had his support and presence the past 12 months. It’s also his birthday at the end of September and I have got something super special planned. (I am still debating whether it will get a blog post or not…)

Health wise I haven’t been as strict with my eating as I would like, some days I reach for the chocolate when I know I shouldn’t. I’ve felt self conscious of my weight, particularly around my neck. I have been monitoring my medication and stopped my antihistamine nasal spray as it contains steroids and that could contribute to the weight gain and affect my appetite making me want to eat more. My exercise routine has been haphazard but I’m hoping the new job will fix that and I’ll be able to get into a better routine and get back into a positive mindset.

Music

Two of my absolute favourite musicians are releasing albums in September; Shane Filan and Shania Twain. Both are huge inspirations to me and I always look forward to hearing new music from them. This is Shania’s first music in 15 years and Shane’s third studio album since Westlife split up in 2012.

Martine McCutcheon also released her first album in 15 years. Martine is a British singer/actress who you may recognise as Natalie from Love Actually – her most famous role. Martine had a string of top 10 singles in the 90s/00s and returned to the music scene this year with her album Lost and Found, written alongside her husband. The album has uptempo, rocky tracks mixed in with heartfelt ballads. I’m particularly loving the debut single, Say I’m Not Alone.

2017 Goals Progress

Related post: Hello 2017!

I briefly mentioned my exercise routine which I am hoping to get back into properly in the coming weeks. I continue to work on taking each day as it comes and this is one thing that requires a lot of effort – I am a constant worrier and always like to have things planned but I’m trying to get better! I haven’t been stressing about blogging and I don’t use social media a lot. I’d say I spend 1 hour at the most each day on social media (not including blog post writing). I have made a small amount of progress with driving. I reversed the car out of the garage and drove it back in twice. I will have more spare time with my new job so I want to put more effort into driving.

Fifteen of ’15

Fifteen of '15Hello beautiful people! Is it just me or does the thought of another year about to begin suddenly make you reflect on the one that’s been? Yesterday’s post saw me talking about my favourite things in 2015 beauty wise, but today I will be sharing with you fifteen of my personal highlights from the past year. Prepare yourselves, this one gets a bit wordy…

#1 – Followed by Lisa Scott-Lee and Faye Tozer on Twitter

If you know me well, you’ll know pop music is my absolute favourite thing in the whole wide world! I could talk about it for days and my head is filled with plenty of pop facts other people would deem ‘useless.’

Lisa and Faye are members of British pop group Steps who are one my favourite bands of all time. On New Year’s Eve 2014, Lisa followed me on Twitter. I didn’t ask her to (though I had in the past) and it was an incredible way to begin the new year. A month later at the end of January, Faye did the same. I have always counted myself lucky to have been tweeted by all of Steps numerous times but to have your idols follow you is a special feeling.

#2 – First time clubbing

In January I turned 20 and celebrated by going out to dinner and then going out clubbing. In New Zealand you can go clubbing once you turn 18 and almost everyone else I know had been but I wanted my first time to be special and worth it. I enjoyed myself a lot and I think that was down to my love for music, I wasn’t self conscious dancing in front of people and I could’ve kept going all night (which I did at a few 21st’s this year!) I haven’t actually been clubbing again but when I do go I know I’ll enjoy it.

#3 – Interviewed by Karen and Kimberley

This year I had the opportunity to feature on the blogs of two of my best blogging buddies. In February, I featured in Karen’s Behind The Blog series and in June I was featured as an Inspirational Blogger on Kimberley’s blog.

#4 – Purchased my first MAC lipstick

In April I made my first visit to the MAC counter and ended up purchasing my first lipstick; Syrup. I couldn’t be more happy with my purchase and still reach for this shade a lot. This is a lovely, girly, neutral shade and definitely worth a swatch next time you’re at the MAC counter!

#5 – Yoga With Adriene

Looking back, April was a very good month. I decided to take on Yoga With Adriene’s 30 Days of Yoga challenge and I blimmin’ loved it! I was a complete newbie to yoga but I didn’t find the positions too challenging. I like how calm yoga made me feel and I enjoyed taking time out for myself every day.

#6 – Getting my first job!

In May I had my first day of paid work and it was such a good feeling to finally have a job. Prior to starting my job I had been to numerous interviews and had been job searching for 18 months.

#7 – Buying my iPhone

In June I made my first big purchase since beginning my job and got an iPhone. I’d had my previous phone for three or so years and it was a basic phone I only used for texting. I worried I wouldn’t use an iPhone very much but I am so glad I bought it and it’s super handy if I need to take pictures when I’m out or want to play a game when I’m bored.

#8 – Winning #Disco25

Dannii Minogue celebrated the 25th anniversary of her debut single Love & Kisses this year and launched an Instagram competition to mark the occasion. I entered and recorded a video of me singing along and was chosen as one of the winners. I received a signed Love & Kisses vinyl record and hand written note.

#9 – Shane Filan – Right Here

I have been a Shane Filan fangirl for the longest time and he released his second solo album ‘Right Here’ in September. I still get excited whenever I listen to Shane’s music. His voice is undoubtedly my favourite to listen to over anyone else – it’s so smooth and clear and he has the most beautiful tone. Shane also co-writes most of his solo material. Personally, I prefer Shane’s debut album as it’s really special to me and brings back so many good memories of 2013; hearing Shane’s solo music for the first time and Shane replying to my questions in Q&A’s.

#10 – Reaching 500 followers!

Also in September I hit a blogging milestone, I reached 500 followers! That was a big achievement for me and a goal I had my eye on since starting my blog. I’m not someone who worries about numbers and tries to be in competition but 500 was a big deal and it made me realise people out there enjoy reading my blog.

#11 – Starbucks French Vanilla Frappucinos

I’m not a coffee drinker and don’t go to Starbucks all that often but when Starbucks had their French Vanilla Frappucinos out I loved them! They’re so tasty and refreshing and I’m gutted they’re not part of the permanent menu. Fingers crossed Starbucks bring them back.

#12 – 44 Ways You Know You’re a Dannii Minogue Fan

October is Dannii Minogue’s birthday month and I decided I wanted to make something for her. In 2014 I sent a parcel to Australia but I wanted to do something different. Originally I came up with the video idea ’44 Reasons I Love Dannii Minogue’ which evolved into ’44 Ways You Know You’re a Dannii Minogue Fan’ so other Minogue fans could relate. Dannii tweeted me to say she saw the video and loved it which absolutely made my day!

To watch the video yourself, click here.

#13 – All Blacks win Rugby World Cup

Most people wouldn’t expect me to like sport but when it comes to rugby I turn into a proud Kiwi. My mum had no doubt the  All Blacks would win and getting up early to watch the final game between New Zealand and Australia was thrilling. The match was entertaining and the All Blacks made history by being the first country to win back to back rugby world cups and being the first country to win the rugby world cup three times.

#14 – Ellie Goulding – Delirium

‘Delirium’ has been named one of 2015’s Best Pop Albums and with good reason! Call me biased but I believe anything Ellie touches turns to gold. I never get sick of listening to Ellie’s music and could listen to her on repeat all day, there’s not many artists I can say that about. I have been listening to Delirium since it’s release and honestly, it gets better with each listen.

#15 – Confidence

In many ways I have saved the best for last. I remember being nominated for the #TakeBackWhatsYours campaign at the beginning of the year and I am pleased to say I rose to the challenge. Over the past 12 months I have changed a lot (for the better) and felt myself grow in confidence. Now I don’t think twice about sharing images of myself on my blog and being open and honest. I’ve learnt to make myself a priority and do what makes me happy. I’ve also become more confident with my writing and the direction I want my blog to go in.

Thank you to everyone for all your support over the past year! Wishing you the very best for 2016 and sending all my love!

October Favourites

October FavouritesHow is it favourites time again already?! Similar to September, October has been a bit weird for me. There have been a few family things going on and I still don’t feel 100%. As a result I only have a small number of favourites to share with you for October – hope you don’t mind!

Onto this month’s favourites:

1. The Body Shop Almond Hand & Nail Cream – I purchased this hand and nail cream back in August and I have been loving using it these past couple of months. Initially, I found the Almond scent slightly sweet but I have been converted and really enjoy it.  A few hours after applying the hand cream (you only need a small amount per application) is when I feel the scent is at it’s best. I have noticed a difference in my nails as well, they aren’t brittle nor do they break easily but they just feel that bit stronger.

2. Shane Filan – Right Here – If you’ve been a reader of my blog for a while now you’ve probably heard me mention my love for Shane Filan. Shane’s second album ‘Right Here’ was released last month and I have been playing it a fair bit. There’s something about Shane’s voice that is so incredibly beautiful. He has this story telling quality; every lyric is so honest and perfectly delivered in his crisp, clear Irish accent. Being the fan girl I am I just had to order a signed copy! Standout Tracks: Me and the Moon, I Could Be, Beautiful To Me and Worst Kind of Love.

3. Essie – Take It Outside – I have been getting into neutral colours with my makeup lately and this month extended that into my polishes. Don’t get me wrong I still love a bright nail but it’s not always going to be work appropriate. I popped my Essie cherry this month and purchased not one but two polishes. Take It Outside, described as a punchy, fresh taupe is the only one I’ve tried so far and it’s gorgeous. It’s almost like a lilac/grey and I imagine it would be very flattering on all skin tones. I’m very impressed with the formula and brush, the polish glides on and two coats is all you need. Definitely pick this polish up if you get the chance!

Markus Feehily - Fire4. Markus Feehily – Fire

I have been listening to a lot of male dominated music this month (how unlike me) and this album has been another standout. If you’re a Westlife fan you’ll know that Shane and Mark were the lead singers of the band and I couldn’t include one’s solo album and not the other. The reason Fire doesn’t appear in the image with the rest of my favourites is because I downloaded the album. I am a stickler for physical copies but by the time I purchased it online and got it shipped it would have cost another $10. 7Digital had it at a very good price of $12.99 for the Deluxe Edition. Like Shane, Mark’s voice has always stood out to me, his voice leans a bit more towards an R&B/gospel/soul sound while still remaining pop. Fire really surprised me; I like the feel of the album, it’s mostly upbeat and the melodies and lyrics are gorgeous. Standout Tracks: Love Is a Drug, Butterfly, Sirens, Casablanca and Find My Way.

October Spotify Playlist

I really enjoy using music to reflect back on the month that has been. It shows not only what I’ve been listening to but the type of music I like and gives you a better idea of my personality. Subconsciously, this month’s playlist was inspired by artists I have listened to for years and I’m still a fan of.

That’s all for this month, be sure to let me know what you’ve been loving!

Week In Review: October 27 – November 2, 2014

I post an update here every Sunday giving an overview of my week. Accompanying photos from my Instagram are also included. Here’s the latest:

A couple of mornings this week I have woken up early, like 6am early, and haven’t been able to go back to sleep. Tuesday, in particular was a long day for me and after returning home from town the pyjama pants definitely went back on!

Tuesday selfie

“Pyjama pants back on, been awake since 6am selfie #selfie #tuesday #meh”

I had my job interview at one of the supermarkets on Wednesday which went quite well. The two people who conducted the interview were both very nice and thought my interview skills were excellent. Getting feedback is useful as it gives me reassurance in what I’m doing. The downside is the job is only for a fixed-term basis over Christmas and the holidays.

Wednesday also marked five years since I sang ‘Issues’  by The Saturdays at a school talent quest. I was 14 at the time and I can’t believe how fast that time’s flown! I can still picture the Thursday evening I got up and sang it in 2009. To commemorate the occasion I uploaded three short videos of me singing a couple of lines from the song.

Links to parts 1, 2 and 3.

My Side of LifeMy copy of My Side of Life arrived on Thursday which was exciting! I’ve started reading it already and have had a sneak peek at the pictures. I love autobiographies because you get to read about everything straight from the author’s perspective and get a real sense of who they are.

This weekend I started my new exercise regime. For the next two months I will be repeating both Jen Selter’s 30 day squat challenge and a 30 day sit up challenge. Instead of doing one challenge each month, I am combining the two. By the end of November I will have completed 15 days of the squat challenge and 15 days of the sit up challenge (including rest days). I will complete the remainder in December. Christmas Day even works out to be a rest day haha!

Exercise regimeI printed out November and December from Design Eat Repeat’s 2014 Monthly Calendar and colour coded.

Purple = # of squats
Blue = # of sit ups
Red = Rest day

Hope you had a great week!

Week In Review: October 6 – October 12, 2014

I post an update here every Sunday giving an overview of my week. Accompanying photos from my Instagram are also included. Here’s the latest:

Pink nails and plannerI started the week off by painting my nails. I opted for a bright pink (Revlon #360 Bubblegum) then accented my index fingers with a simple glitter polish (OPI Pink, Yet Lavender from the Mariah Carey Collection). This photo also features my Hot Pink Filofax, I love how it matches my nails.

Nails

This image was taken on Friday. You can see how well my nails held up throughout the week.

This week I launched a new ‘Meet the Blogger’ section. To read about how you can feature on the blog and see my Meet the Blogger post click here and here.

On Friday I was very excited to see I had reached 100 followers, again a massive thank you! My current follower tally is 105. The blog has also had over 800 hits in four months so I’m really quite proud of what I’ve managed to achieve so far.

Over the weekend I completed my 30 day sit up challenge which I started after completing Jen Selter’s 30 day squat challenge last month. I ended up doing 140 sit ups, 7x as many as day one (20). In a weird way I enjoyed doing the challenges and plan to keep on doing a mixture of squats and sit ups through a regime of my own.

Shane Filan - My Side of LifeShane Filan released his autobiography ‘My Side of Life’ on Thursday (09/10/2014) and I ordered my copy today. I was reading the previews and it sounds like it’s going to be a thrilling read! I’m currently reading The Road Code so I need to get my butt in gear and finish that before Shane’s book arrives. I hate starting a new book without finishing the one I’m reading first.

Be sure to let me know what you achieved this week!

Chanelle x

Happy birthday Shane Filan!

Shane Filan

For those of you who don’t know who Shane Filan is, he was a member of Irish boyband Westlife. Naturally, he is pursuing a solo career and his debut album ‘You and Me’ has already enjoyed Top 10 success in The UK and Ireland.

Today, July 5th, Shane will celebrate his 35th birthday.

I wanted to make this post because he is one of my favourite people and genuinely lovely. I fell in love with his voice when I was a little girl. His tone is so clear and crisp and possesses a real honesty. What I mean by honesty is he makes you believe every word he’s singing. In my opinion Shane is one of the most talented singers around, he always sings live and sounds perfect. I challenge you to find a bad performance!

Not only is Shane a talented singer he can song-write too. He co-wrote every song on ‘You and Me’ as he wanted to develop his own sound as an artist and sing songs that mean something to him. The album is dedicated to his wife as most of the songs are about her. *Swoon*

Shane is also extremely kind when it comes to his fans. It’s nice to see someone give back so much.

I’m incredibly lucky to be followed by Shane on Twitter and have been tweeted by him twice. One was for my 17th birthday back in 2012 which was really special!

I can’t put into words the amount of love I have for this man and how much he inspires me. I hope his day is as wonderful as he is!

Get To Know Me: Part 2

In the second installment of my ‘Get To Know Me’ feature I thought I’d talk about my biggest passion – music. Music really is my life, most of my money is spent on CDs as I prefer a physical copy of an album rather than a download from iTunes. I enjoy holding the album in my hands and reading the liner notes and thank yous.

I’ve loved music ever since I can remember. When I was a little girl I always listened to cassettes or the radio, there was always music playing in our house. I don’t remember having any major influences at such a young age but Shania Twain’s ‘Come On Over’ has always been a favourite album of mine.

I became serious about singing and wanting to be a singer when I was 10 years old. Although I’ve had approximately one singing lesson in my life, my ultimate dream is to move to the UK and become a singer. I’m my own teacher and sing for a couple of hours most days. I’d also love to do something in music behind the scenes.

A turning point was when I rediscovered Steps. I was only a few years old when they were around the first time and couldn’t really comprehend the fangirl life. Their music is often described as cheesy pop but the songs (and dance routines) are classic! For me music represents happiness and Steps are a huge part of that.

I won’t go into detail about all the musicians I listen to but I’ll give you a rundown of my favourites:

  • Steps
  • The Saturdays
  • Kylie Minogue
  • Dannii Minogue
  • Shane Filan/Westlife
  • Ellie Goulding
  • Girls Aloud
  • Shania Twain
  • Delta Goodrem
  • Pixie Lott
  • Rita Ora
  • Lawson

Are there are any artists you think I should check out?
