Makeup For Glasses Wearers

I have worn glasses since I was five years old and I am so used to them that I don’t like people seeing me without glasses on. They are like a security blanket and I feel vulnerable and naked when I’m not wearing them. I prefer glasses to contacts for this reason and also because I don’t like the thought of sticking my fingers in my eyes. In all the time I’ve worn glasses they have gone from geek to chic and are now considered cool. Glasses can be an extension of a person’s style or they can be worn purely for aesthetics.

I currently have two pairs of glasses (one black and one light purple) and funnily enough every past pair of glasses I’ve had have been purple. Purple seems to suit my fair skin and hair colour and it just works. I tend to go for metallic, metal frames and violet, indigo hues. I had been thinking about getting black frames for a while because I wanted to be bolder and they go with everything. My black glasses are slightly heaver than my purple ones but I do get even amounts of wear out of both (it may not look like it from Instagram but I do!)

I always like to make an effort to do my face nicely for work and when I go out. I came up with  some tips I stick to when it comes to applying makeup, which you might find useful if you also wear glasses.

#1. Think About Your Frames

Colour, whether they’re metal or plastic, shape of lenses, how big the lenses are and most importantly the style of makeup you’re going for. If you don’t wear a lot of makeup you’ll have an easy decision but I like my glasses to work with my makeup not be the main attraction. For example, if you’ve got gold metallic frames, you could pull that metallic shimmer into an eye look by applying a gold shadow and pairing it with a red lip.

When I wear my black frames I either pair them with a shimmery, neutral eye look and bold lip or a dark, smoky eye and a lighter, glossy looking lip colour to balance everything out. With my purple frames I can’t go too light with lipstick or eyeshadow otherwise I look washed out. I love to play up the purple and bold lips and colourful eyes actually work together with these frames because they’re a neutral shade of purple.

#2. Really Get To Know Your Face and Features

Since I started my admin role towards the end of 2018 I have been doing my makeup at 6am nearly every morning so I don’t have natural light on my side and I rely on my bedroom light. I don’t wear glasses when I apply makeup or use a magnifying mirror because I am so used to my facial features and the products I wear. I know how much to apply out of practice and instinct.

#3. Decide Whether You Want Eyes or Lips To Be the Focus

Unless there’s an occasion or I’m doing a themed look I will pick either eyes or lips to be the focus. It’s all about balance and streamlining what you want to draw attention to. I usually go lighter/neutral on the eyes and bolder on the lips but that’s just personal preference. Depending on your frames, colour on the lips and eyes can work – there’s no hard and fast rule.

#4. Go Lighter With Your Brows

If you have dark, thick frames you don’t want it to look like your eyebrows have been drawn on with a Sharpie. Natural brows look less harsh and will help to break up the different areas of your face and make your glasses stand out more. If you have lighter coloured frames don’t over compensate by making your brows darker, this will only make them stand out more and make the frames look more stark.

#5. Don’t Feel Obliged To Wear Eyeliner

Again, if you have dark frames thick liner will draw attention to the eye area. If eyeliner is a must try going for a brown or a thin line to give the eyes shape. I don’t wear eyeliner, I personally don’t feel I need it. I also can’t apply it to save to my life!

#6. Don’t Put Glasses On Straight After Applying Mascara

Don’t make mascara the last product you apply and put your glasses on straight after, chances are you will get little streaks down your lenses and have to take your glasses off again to clean them. My advice is to leave the blush/highlighter/setting spray step of your routine until after you’ve applied mascara to give it that extra minute or so to dry. You can thank me later!

#7. Setting Spray/Setting Powder Is Your Friend

Don’t forget this step if you often find smudges on your glasses throughout the day from makeup. Powder around the nose where nose pads sit, near the brows and under the eyes where the rims of frames can touch your skin if they sit close to your face. Being a dry skinned gal I tend to reach for setting spray more than powder but both products do the trick.

August Favourites 2018

August has been the first month in a while where I have felt positive again. I am not crying and wallowing and I feel like I am moving on. I am listening to music a lot and singing which always helps and I take joy from small things. Time is a healer and I hope each month continues to get better.

Onto this month’s favourites:

1. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle – Hands up who knew this would feature! I have used this item pretty much every day since I got it and the colour adds such a gorgeous, subtle glow to my skin. I’ve tried it as an all over face powder a few times too which also looks nice. This is quickly becoming one of my favourite makeup products for daily use.

2. L’Oreal True Match Lumi Foundation in W1-2 Porcelain Ivory – I purchased this foundation back in March and while I am focusing on using Rimmel’s Match Perfection as part of my Project Pan I have delved into this foundation numerous times since purchasing it. The formula is lightweight and thin in texture which I like as it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. This gives a dewy effect without too much shine and is a really lovely foundation.

3. Roxy 33 Black Glasses – When I toyed with getting new glasses a couple of months ago I knew I wanted a black pair. I went on many trips to the optometrist and tried on numerous pairs of black frames – I had a criteria. I wanted satin-matte black frames, plastic arms (my previous pair had metal arms and the coating was peeling off which is why I was hesitant to have metal arms again) and the lenses couldn’t be too deep otherwise they’d touch my cheeks and look too big for my face. I settled on this pair from Roxy as the pink metal on the inside of the lenses and bright pink arms are very me. I was so close to choosing the Kylie Minogue 04 frames in black though. I’ve received a few compliments on this pair of glasses and I feel pretty when I wear them.

4. xoBeauty Liquid Lipstick in Serendipity – In my June Favourites I featured another of these liquid lipsticks in the shade Carpe Diem. I absolutely love Carpe Diem and Serendipity is beautiful too. Serendipity is a lovely peachy-pink nude and the formula is amazing, they don’t dry down matte and stay slightly creamy once applied. They fade evenly throughout the day and last through eating and drinking at work. They have a lovely creme brulee scent too.

5. ‘The Breakup 💔’ – Earlier this month I shared my most personal and intimate blog post yet detailing my breakup. I am so proud of this post and since writing it I feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest and I’m not carrying around this big secret anymore because I shared what happened and how the breakup came about with my blogging friends. Everyone has been so supportive and the comments on this post make me smile, people really poured their heart into what they said. *CLICK HERE* if you haven’t read ‘The Breakup 💔’ yet.

Redhead Rambles #29

Hello everyone and welcome to ‘Redhead Rambles’. The series does what it says on the tin, it is a redhead (me) rambling about her week. I share what I’ve been up to each week, how I’ve been feeling and what I’ve been listening to or watching. Occasionally I will my share favourite blog posts and links I’ve found useful or interesting.

  • My practice drive last Friday panicked me. I didn’t feel as comfortable this time and couldn’t find my flow. The carpark I’ve been going to doesn’t give me a chance to drive in a straight line for very long so I can’t get up much speed and I have to turn a lot which is making me feel disjointed. Next time I’m going to try driving down and around my street.
  • I cleaned during my days off. I washed makeup brushes, changed my sheets, vacuumed half the house and also did some personal grooming; plucked my eyebrows and shaved my legs.
  • I placed my second xoBeauty order. If you didn’t know xoBeauty is New Zealand YouTuber Shaaanxo’s brand. My order shipped on Monday and arrived Tuesday, which is awesome service! Because I spent over $50 I got free shipping. I purchased an eye brush, a face brush, and three lip colours. If you want to see what I got let me know and let me know whether you’d prefer a blog post or Instagram image/Instagram story.
  • The internet has been much better this week which convinces me even more it was the bad weather that made it play up.
  • In last week’s Redhead Rambles I mentioned I had some new page ideas for my bullet journal. I have made a page for my car with important dates relating to insurance and registration and also a petrol tracker to see how often I buy petrol and how much I spend. The other page is for orders I make online. I write the date I placed the order, what the item is and there’s a column I tick when the item is sent and another column I tick when I receive the order. I decorated with a little bit of washi tape which I want to start using more in my journal. Question for other journallers out there, does the acid from washi tape leave marks on pages?
  • I made two trips back to the optician to get the earpieces on my glasses readjusted. After wearing them for a couple of days I noticed they were slipping down and I had to keep pushing them up. I’m still wearing the new pairs for half of the day and wearing my old pair at work until I’m properly used to the new lenses.
  • I tried MAC’s See Sheer and like Hug Me it applies more pigmented on me than it appears in swatches online.
  • On Wednesday it marked 8 years since I joined Twitter. One of my very first tweets was from Dannii Minogue. I tweeted her an image of that tweet and she liked the image and replied. Love her!
  • I got called into work on Thursday.
  • I researched a whole bunch of books for my to be read list. I’ve nearly crossed them all off my current list and I’m excited to add new authors to the list as well.
  • My favourite YouTube videos this week include a Zara and ASOS Haul from In the Frow and What’s In My Suitcase from Lily Pebbles.

Redhead Rambles #28

Hello everyone and welcome to ‘Redhead Rambles’. The series does what it says on the tin, it is a redhead (me) rambling about her week. I share what I’ve been up to each week, how I’ve been feeling and what I’ve been listening to or watching. Occasionally I will my share favourite blog posts and links I’ve found useful or interesting.

  • I had leftover pizza and garlic bread from Dominos last Friday for lunch and I don’t know what it is but leftovers always taste so good!
  • I placed an order on White Fox Boutique for two white crop tees. The tees are a collaboration with Kiwi beauty guru Shaaanxo and while everything looked nice I wanted these most. The order arrived on Thursday and the crop tees are everything I wanted them to be!
  • On Saturday I made myself and omelette for breakfast before placing another clothing order. This time it was Glassons who I have ordered from lots of times before. In this order I picked up basics like tank tops, a pair of leggings and a shirt. My Glassons order arrived on Monday and I am always impressed by their shipping. I will have a haul up next week sharing what I bought from Glassons and White Fox Boutique and what the items look like on.
  • Saturday afternoon was spent on the couch reading Still Me by Jojo Moyes.
  • On Sunday I tried some new makeup and was impressed with everything. MAC’s Soft and Gentle is amazing!
  • Claire Richards announced her solo album ‘My Wildest Dreams’ and I instantly pre-ordered a personalised copy. I also stayed up a bit later to listen to the premiere of her debut single on BBC Radio 2.
  • I had Subway for lunch on Monday; three pepper chicken.
  • Dannii Minogue answered my question during a Twitter Q&A.
  • The weather has been mostly wet and dull and the internet has been cutting in and out all week. I wouldn’t be surprised if the internet problem is weather related.
  • I shared a post all about my breakup and what happened that led to it. Writing it felt good and I feel like it will help me move on and I’m not carrying this secret around because my blogging friends now know what happened. All the comments have been kind and supportive so thank you! *CLICK HERE* to read about the break up.
  • I got some new page ideas for my bullet journal so I might try and implement those over the next couple of weeks. Looking at inspiration also made me want pens and stationery, in particular a set of pastel fineliners from Staedtler.
  • I picked up my new glasses on Thursday! I shared photos of both pairs over on my Instagram if you want to take a look!
  • Thursday afternoon was spent blogging, reading and catching up on a few bits and bobs at home.

What I’ve been listening to:

Claire Richards – On My Own – Claire is one of my top five favourite vocalists and as the lead singer of my favourite band Steps she has had a very successful career. For the first time after 20 years in the business she is going solo and releasing her own album away from the band. I’m expecting heartfelt, catchy lyrics with a powerhouse vocal and the first single doesn’t disappoint!

Redhead Rambles #26

Hello everyone and welcome to ‘Redhead Rambles’. The series does what it says on the tin, it is a redhead (me) rambling about her week. I share what I’ve been up to each week, how I’ve been feeling and what I’ve been listening to or watching. Occasionally I will my share favourite blog posts and links I’ve found useful or interesting.

  • I painted my nails using Tiramisu For Two by OPI.
  • I took out car insurance and went for my first drive last Friday. I did loops around a car park and didn’t go faster than 20km but mum said I did well for my first time.
  • I had a lazy Saturday afternoon, watched some videos and didn’t do much else.
  • Work on Sunday wasn’t very busy but it’s nice to be able to catch up and get the library looking nice and tidy for the upcoming week.
  • Halo has been very cuddly, she likes it when I wear my dressing gown and wants to cuddle in to keep warm.
  • On Monday I witnessed an incident at work and while it was a little scary it hasn’t affected me.
  • After work on Monday I went for another look in Specsavers and came up with a shortlist of four black frames which I posted on Instagram. The feedback was much appreciated and I will now reveal my favourite pairs were 2 and 3 (going down vertically). See image *HERE*.
  • I wanted mum’s opinion on my shortlisted pairs so on Tuesday we went to Specsavers again and I actually ended up choosing a completely different black pair. I’d seen the pair I chose online but hadn’t been able to find them in store until Tuesday but straight away they felt like the right choice. I also decided on a second pair of glasses that are more dainty if I don’t want to wear black frames. I went for light purple with a similar shape to the pair I have now but bigger lenses. There isn’t a picture of the light purple pair online but I can show you the black pair.

  • I’ve been enjoying wearing my Opal highlighter by Becca this week, I wore it on Tuesday and Wednesday and it gives such a pretty shimmer to the cheeks.
  • Mum made pizza for dinner on Wednesday night which as always was delicious!
  • I read *THIS* blog post about getting over breakups on In the Frow and tweeted the lovely Victoria afterwards letting her know my situation briefly and that I enjoyed her post. She replied back saying she hopes I’m okay which was super sweet.
  • On Thursday I had an eye exam so my glasses will be fitted with the correct lenses. My last exam was two years ago and I want to make sure I can see properly if I’m going to be driving.
  • The weather on Thursday was weird, it would rain then come out sunny and it was cold. Only one more month of winter to go!
  • On Thursday afternoon I planned some blog posts, read and chilled out – that’s what days off are for.

Redhead Rambles #25

Hello everyone and welcome to ‘Redhead Rambles’. The series does what it says on the tin, it is a redhead (me) rambling about her week. I share what I’ve been up to each week, how I’ve been feeling and what I’ve been listening to or watching. Occasionally I will my share favourite blog posts and links I’ve found useful or interesting.

  • On Friday my brother and I went into town in my car. He likes the car and enjoyed his drive.
  • I went into Specsavers to try on some of the glasses from Kylie Minogue’s range. Most of the frames didn’t suit me but I had fun.
  • On Friday after being in town my brother and I had curry for lunch, it’s one of our traditions. I had butter chicken and a cheese and garlic naan – the naan was especially tasty!
  • I was tired on Friday afternoon but I didn’t have a nap. I read and cleaned some of my makeup brushes.
  • My brother went home on Saturday and I wasn’t in the best mood. Again I felt tired and just wanted to keep to myself.
  • I started reading Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. I finished the book on Wednesday.
  • I purchased a mini Vanilla pigment from MAC for $10. Vanilla is a shade I’ve had my eye on for a while and at that price it’s a steal. It’s second hand but barely used.
  • I also made my very first Beauty Bay order. I’ve heard other bloggers mention the site before and I’ve browsed it myself but nothing caught my eye until this week. I am keeping the items a secret as I bought them for the upcoming blog giveaway for when I hit 1,000 followers.
  • I watched *THIS* video by Jim Chapman about mental health. I’m sharing in case it helps someone. There are useful links in the description box too.
  • On Wednesday I put petrol in my car for the first time.
  • On Thursday I went back to Specsavers. I even curled my hair and did nice makeup for the second visit! This time my focus was on black frames. I’ve worn purple for years and while I love them there’s something about black that looks sophisticated. There’s two frames I like the look of, the top pair is Kylie Minogue and the bottom pair is by Alex Perry.

What I’ve been listening to:

Kylie Minogue – Golden – I’m always in a Kylie mood!

Shania Twain – Come On Over and Now – It’s less than 5 months until I get to see Shania and I’m so excited! My brother and I played my old Come On Over cassette in my car when we were in town and I got ready to Now on Thursday.

Blogger Cliches

As bloggers there are certain items and styles that we seem to catch on to. In a way it shows a connection between us bloggers, we find the same things aesthetically pleasing and feel in touch with one another. In 5 years time it will be interesting to see how the trends we associate with bloggers have changed. I am in no way poking fun at fellow bloggers, I merely wanted to share this post and play a game to see how cliche/typical a blogger you are!

#1. Copper/rose gold everything!

Over the past couple of years rose gold has become the trend. Personally I like rose gold but I don’t buy everything in rose gold and prefer to have accents of it scattered throughout my bedroom. For example, I’ve got a rose gold lamp, and a couple of rose gold baskets, one on my desk and the other on top of my drawers. I also own the rose gold makeup brush and watch featured in the main image.

#2. Fairy lights

Fairy lights aren’t strictly just a blogger thing but they are often used in blogger’s photographs as a prop. They also double as lighting and bounce light around in photographs. I have a couple of sets which I display in vases, this helps to keep the lights in one place and they look neat and tidy.

#3. Candles

Like fairy lights, candles act as a source of light. Many YouTubers have a candle lit in the background of their videos. A lot bloggers I see use candles as a photo prop and most of the time they aren’t lit. 90% of the candles I see are from Jo Malone or Diptyque. I have a few candles but I don’t tend to use them as photo props. Two out of my three I haven’t even lit yet!

#4. Flowers

Do I hear you say fake peonies? I love nothing better than a natural flower and tend to photograph them when I have the chance.

#5. Marble

Similar to the rose gold trend, marble seems to be everywhere. I much prefer rose gold to marble and don’t own anything with a marble pattern. If you don’t have a marble bench top for your photos a lot of bloggers make their own marble backdrop with a wallpaper sample and a wooden board.

#6. Lightboxes

I find these kind of cool but not not the most practical. I don’t own a lightbox but I know you only get a certain amount of letters when you purchase one so you’ve got to buy extra letters to be able to create messages. I wonder how much power these use and where people store them when they’re not in use or they’re not turned on and the message is not lit up?

#7. Trinket trays

These are really useful props because first and foremost they are used to store jewellery or trinkets in and can easily be emptied to be used in blog photography. I have a set of three ceramic trays from kikki.K and the smallest one appears in the main image of this post.

#8. Polaroid pictures

In November 2016 I purchased a pink Instax camera because the idea of instant polaroid photos seemed like a fun concept. I quickly got tired of wondering whether my picture would develop with the right exposure and I ended up throwing a bunch of pictures away because they didn’t turn out well. I actually sold my camera and the film I didn’t use and I don’t regret it. I’ve still got some nice shots from the pictures that did turn out well.

#9. Eyelash curlers

I see a lot of rose gold eyelash curlers in photos. I have a set of unused, black eyelash curlers which I did consider including in the image of this post but they didn’t sit nicely. One day I’ll learn how to get long, fluttery lashes.

#10. Thick black glasses frames

I wear glasses and it used to be considered ‘ugly’ if you wore glasses. Now it seems every second person seems to have a pair of thick black frames that they wear because glasses are cool (geek chic, right?!). I’m sure some of those pairs of glasses don’t even have lenses in them.

How many of these are you guilty of? Me, I’m guilty of about 50% of these!

My New Specs!

My New Specs!Happy Wednesday everyone! Hope your week is going well so far!

Ever since I was five years old I have worn glasses so they are a huge part of my identity. I don’t hate the fact I wear glasses and the thought of wearing contact lenses doesn’t appeal to me for a couple of reasons: I don’t like the thought of sticking my fingers in my eyes and after wearing glasses for so long, I’d feel naked without them. My eyes (and my face as I found out this time round) are small and I like how glasses make my eyes more prominent. I’m now onto my fifth pair of glasses and I wanted to share what they look like as well as talking you through my decision to get a new pair.

My fifth pair came about a few weeks ago when I went to book my Learner Licence driving test. Before you sit the test you get your photo taken and have your eyes tested. I didn’t do too well with the eye test so I had to book an appointment with the optometrist. I passed the check at the optometrist so the following Tuesday when I sat my test (and passed!) I was given my paper driving licence. Following the driver licence check at the optometrist I made an appointment to have a full eye test later in the week. I had my previous pair of glasses for seven and a half years and when I had the full eye test I was surprised to learn my eyes hadn’t deteriorated a great deal in that time. I made the decision to get new glasses though especially if I’m going to be driving, I want to be able to see what I’m doing and where I’m going.

It’s sad saying goodbye to my fourth pair of glasses because I don’t know if I will find another pair as perfect but I will keep them as my backup pair. When I was looking at new frames I knew what I liked and what I didn’t. I didn’t want anything big because I have a small face and I didn’t want any dark colours. As much as I love ‘geek chic’ on other people, it doesn’t suit me. I wanted something lightweight with quite small lenses and most of the pairs I was drawn to were purple. Thinking about it now, almost every pair of glasses I’ve had have been purple and the colour suits me so why not?

I found a lot of the pairs were too big for me and I joked that I should be looking at the kid’s frames and low and behold they were a much better fit for me – I didn’t realise my face was that tiny! Deciding on a pair of glasses is a difficult decision and not one that I could make on the spot so I was allowed to bring home a few pairs of glasses (two of which were children’s) to help me make up my mind. I posted an image to Instagram with me wearing my top three pairs and asked for your input. Top 3 GlassesThe first pair proved popular and that was the pair I liked best too. There was something that didn’t sit right with me though and I didn’t end up choosing any of those three pairs. When I returned the glasses to the optometrist I had another look at the frames and a different pair jumped out at me. I said to mum you instantly know if a pair is right for you or not and I felt that with this pair whereas I hadn’t with any of the other five. They fit the bill perfectly, small, light and purple. They are kid’s frames but even the optical assistant agreed they looked nice and are a perfect fit.

Without further ado, let me introduce you to my new pair of glasses. They even have a name, Arikara (not chosen by me):New Glasses

What do you think of my new glasses? Expect to see them around a lot for the next wee while! I’d also like to hear about any experiences you have when it comes to buying glasses.
